End of Year Exhibition

 

 

The studio was a new studio at Leeds School of Architecture headed by Sarah Mills and Doreen Benarth. At the end of year exhibion as a studio we came together to create a insitu pavilion to exhibit our filmic studies, from forensically analysisng problems in London, Mumbai and Berlin. 

 

The Pavilion was a team effot made within three days before the exhibtion opened in June 2014. We created spaces to show the films we produced throughout the year playing with the senses in the space by sinking a mirror into the floor below the projections. 

 

The films produced throughout the year were collated together to create a looping snapshot of the work that we udnertook. There was also a film porttraying all the model and set making that we made.

The 'Memory Machine' interrogates the current dialect of memory, and its physical manifestation within the City of Berlin, offering a new architectural vocabulary of memory projection. 'The Machine is an ever evolving amenity, facilitated by its people, its main function being a means of collecting, storing and projecting personal memories, in either analogue or digital format. 'The Machine' comprises of three main elements: The Photograph Archives, The Artefact Tower and The Diary Rooms. The design of these three elements is derivative of a common cinematic narrative, the 'Three Act Structure', creating a cinematic  experiential journey through and between each event.

Reciprocation of the Reclaimed explores anarchy as a future architectural utopian phenomenon; the architecture seeks to become an active participation in the building of a community and organisation through communal action. The aim of the project is to reclaim the land, re-establish the abandoned, enabled by the infrastructure that is run by local participation. To create a connection through out the community, linking the schools, the green spaces, the residential areas and retail street. The project aims at providing a space for re urbanisation of Alte Schonhauser Strasse providing an alternative way of living in Berlin.

 

The two sites within Alte Schonhauser Strasse form the main physical connection, which could be developed to expand over a larger area of Mitte. To create this new connection within the community the first phase of the development will be a reclaimed materials store, the storage facility is able to collect vital resources for the infrastructure that can be re-used, the development will grow and change depending on what materials are available and what function it is needed for. The reclamation tower stores precious goods that create the facade of the building; this highlights the beauty of the discarded items. The second stage of the proposition is to create a community hub, which provides a safe connection from the school to the park. Education zones, which have extra facilities for the surrounding schools to use, these are to encourage specialists subject that may not be available to children in school. Thirdly the community hub will provide a place for the community to have their say, to debate and make adaptation to their city. This will be open to any walking by on the street open access for all.

Mega cities - As populations grow daily by the thousands , how the city will cope is imperative to humanity's survival . I am interested in the adaptation and mutation of the great cities and how technology and architecture can help the change .

 

One proposed thesis project focuses on the slum within Mumbai - Dharavi . The city is one of the most polluted cities within the modern world .The proposed scheme aims to combat this , using a series of innovative technical proposals the projects aims to clean and filter the toxic air released by the industrial tanneries within the area.

The Thames is a redundant space, which is not being utilized as part of the urban fabric. Woolwich’s history is heavily influenced by the River, however, more recently the City has lost its connection.

 

The project aims to link Woolwich and the Thames back together again. The intervention links and supplies a series of underground and over ground bathing pools and public spaces The intervention deals with time, tide and the rituals of the everyday as well as yearly events.

 

Woolwich Waters undertakes a transformation from an industrial and traffic junctions which connect Woolwich to North Woolwich and also to the rest of the city. The bath design  has emerged out of the desire to extend the Thames path way and connect the main infrastructures that inhabit the Woolwich Thames.  The proposition realises the transition from land to water as a series of spaces that respond to existing structures and the fluctuating tide.

The Paddington Interventions both deal with the poor circulation around the Station, lack of usable and open public space and the staggered route between the Underground and proposed Crossrail platforms. It opens up a new public square below existing ground level to form a new station entrance. The spaces contained within the Intervention allow access and contain facilities for the different users of the area. This focuses in the second semester on a Health Hub facility that provides green open space and complimentary therapies that connect with St. Mary’s Hospital next to the site. Privacy of the space and the requirements for plant growth to be used for therapy treatments were the distinguishing factors for the design.

The project intends to create a pedestrian route from Paddington Station to the Westway, in relation with the infrastructure, the history, and the existing community on the site. The movement is mostly horizontal, while the perspective is bordered by the constant presence of the bridges. The Museum of Infrastructure is the starting point of the designed journey. At the end, a new object is inserted in the urban texture- a tower that offers the possibility of an overall view from a higher level. Not only the museum itself contains exhibits, but the entire site acts like a dynamic infrastructure gallery that lives and breaths together with the people inhabiting it.

On concepts of ‘the common’, rethinking the public and private within the current paradigm of crisis. With the tools of exploration such as model, essay film, line drawing and photo montage to investigate public spaces near to new infrastructure site, Farringdon station in London. Underground space of Smithfield market was revealed as possibility site for constructing ‘New Commons’. Proposed erection of new underground skate park, café, bicycle parking area and bicycle repair stores at Existing Smithfield Market basement car park. A 1:20 scale model was built to study proposed spatial relation to existing condition. Heat flow was main core of design approach.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Xin

 

Whitechapel Road is the central component of public realm, movement and town centre activity. The formation of a secondary loop at Durward Street that runs parallel to Whitechapel Road provides the opportunity for a network of new spaces. At Whitechapel Road, the Whitechapel Street Market creates a lively, busy atmosphere in the town centre and around the station. While Durward Street is a quiet and calm street, surrounded by residential blocks, school and a sport centre. Mumbai is a city full of Illegal activity, which many turn a blind eye to. Over half the population take part in illegal activity, many live illegally in slums which also sustain their often illegal jobs. But also the streets of Mumbai are full of hawkers serving the needs of population, from Chai sellers, fruit and vegetables to electronics and leather goods you can buy everything from the illegal city as you can from the legal city. 

 

The project focuses on the needs of the hawkers around Churchgate Station. The station is the southernmost train station in Mumbai and is used by an estimated 3 million people daily. Outside the station the common areas have not been designed to allow for this flow of people, when you add the hawkers in to this situation there is not enough space at all and everyone is vying for the smallest bit of space. 

 

The project looked at re-distributing the undeveloped land in the area allowing adequate space for pedestrian and hawker alike. I also analysed the needs of the hawker, the right to their livelihood, even though it is illegal and trying to make it legal if space was re-distributed to them in this key area of the city. The brief went on to establish a co-operative for the hawkers which they pay into, it allows access to funds in times of need, it also provided day care facilities for young children so hawkers time is not divided.
