The theme of Bernardet ́s film essay is the city of Sao Paulo and its type of urban planning, guided by capitalism. It ́s the same discussion that appears in Godard ́s 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her, around the city of Paris. However, in São Paulo, Sinfonia e Cacofonia the city is analysed by the perspective of the cinema itself. By a montage of archive images and scenes, Bernardet tries to understand how Sao Paulo ́s cinema interpreted the city throughout history. And what the film shows is an inhospitable, dismal and crushing city, relating it to the capitalism, in which the ones that don ́t fit to the system are expelled and marginalised. The essay film is entirely audiovisual, with no verbal commentary.
